A Band for the Mister: Part 2

May 25, 2010

Many moons ago it seems, I posted about an amazing deal we had found on a wedding band for Mr. Jelly ( It was a white gold and platinum band from Macy’s, and it was perfect – or so we thought.

It was actually a half-size too big, and every jeweler we went to said that re-sizing it would be risky because of the white gold-platinum combination. We briefly toyed with the idea of adding sizing beads to the ring, but decided against it. Ultimately, we didn’t want to take the risk of re-sizing so we returned the ring, and it was back to the drawing board.

For weeks, we kept looking for a similar ring but we couldn’t find anything that we liked as much as the original. Then Mama Jelly suggested that we have the ring custom made, something I hadn’t really considered before. I’m not sure why, but I had the crazy idea that anything that is custom made = more expensive. With experience, I’ve now learned that this is simply not true. After a little research, we found a great jeweler that we trust and who quoted us a very reasonable price for a custom white-gold recreation of the Macy’s ring. Without further ado, here is the new ring:

The ring was made by the amazing Chabo’s Jewelry in San Francisco. I cannot recommend them enough!

Like I said, we were both a little apprehensive about getting something custom made, and I think we both kind of expected to find something wrong with it. We were pleasantly surprised when the ring was exactly what we had wanted all along! It looks perfect, and it’s even better than the old one because it’s all white gold (therefore lighter, which Mr. Jelly likes) and “comfort fit,” which the old ring was not. Here are the two rings side-by-side:

Now that we have found a jeweler that we trust, I will likely be getting my wedding band custom made as well! Now if I could just settle on a design… Have you gotten anything custom made for your wedding?
